Working in health care isn’t for the faint of heart. Whether you work directly with patients or in one of the countless and crucial behind-the-scenes jobs, it’s likely that your days are demanding physically and mentally. Caring for the well-being of others is a high calling, after all.

So, how can you prioritize safety when you’re chiefly focused on helping others? It doesn’t have to be overwhelming. In fact, one of the best places to start is with a designated team of people who have the time and space to assess safety risks. That team can evaluate the need for personal protective equipment and help staff use it properly, train on proper ergonomics, teach safe and sustainable patient handling, and more.

Read on to start creating a health care environment that takes care of the people who take care of everyone else.

    Getting Started:

IV in hospitalWhile you’re considering practices to keep workers safe as they care for others, don’t overlook the value of self care. Research has long proven that taking a few moments to check in with yourself can reduce stress and lower the risk of injury.

Encourage the people you supervise to ask themselves questions that gauge their emotional health. These are questions like: “Am I aware of my emotions?” and “What’s the tone of my self-talk?”. Next, have workers consider their emotional triggers, whether they are getting sleep, exercise and good nutrition, and whether they have a good support system around them.

Being a good example of self care isn’t about having all the answers. It’s simply encouraging others to ask themselves some meaningful questions.
