Getting started is easy. Safety awareness isn’t an singular accomplishment—it’s a continual way of working, a long-term effort. But you’re not going to shift the culture and lower your premiums by tomorrow morning. So start with a few easy steps. 1. Choose some basic safety goals. It could be you’re trying to reduce accidents, or lower your insurance premium, or both. Maybe you just have one department that simply needs to know you’re keeping them safe. Whatever your goals, write them down. 2. Read this [PDF]. It’s a great primer for letting your employees or co-workers know that workplace safety is a company priority. 3. Let someone know. Choose one or two co-workers who would make good partners in this effort. They could be supervisors, subordinates, or someone from a completely different department. Tell them you want to work on improving safety, and ask if they’ll help. Soon, you’re going to have a Safety Committee, so it will be helpful to start getting team members on board who are motivated to improving your workplace. 4.
